TRIBUTE.MOV premieres the new films and presents the early works of local digital indie heroes: Kidlat Tahimik, Roxlee, & Lav Diaz. Roxlee’s graphic novel “Cesar Asar In The Planet Of The Noses”, Kidlat Tahimik’s DVD “Video-Palaro: The Video Diaries Of Kidlat Tahimik”, and Lav Diaz’s CD “Impiyerno: Songs From & Inspired by the Cinema of Lav Diaz” will also be launched. FILMCONCERT.MOV screens Pinoy classics by Manuel Conde (“Genghis Khan”, the first Philippine film to compete in Venice), FH Constantino (“Sandata At Pangako”, a crime and drugs movie starring FPJ), Joe Climaco (“Biglang Yaman”, the comedy classic starring Pugo & Togo), and Carlos Vander Tolosa (the earliest remaining Philippine film, made in 1939) accompanied with new live soundtracks by Pedicab, Taken By Cars, The Brockas, Lolita Carbon, & Radioactive Sago Project. She stars in Woo Ming-jin’s Kurus: Days of the Turquoise Sky, which will be shown on October 2, 2008 , 9PM , its Philippine Premiere at the Robinsons Galleria Indiesine. Turquoise Sky is a poignant autobiographical film that reflects lives which are depicted often as trivial and understated, but does say something about the society in which these lives are being led. Ali (Arshad Zamir) is a 15-year-old school boy going through the pains of growing up: living in a single- parent household, smart-ass school bullies, embarrassing parents and teenage boredom. But it is the arrival of his new English teacher, Miss Liew (Soo) that ignites in him the fever of a young, serious schoolboy crush. Turquoise Sky is not just a story of young infatuation, but also delves into sharp observations on Malaysia ’s multiracial social construct. It is a story that is so common, it is often overlooked, but is significant and as real as a childhood love as it can get. Turquoise Sky stars Ahmad Muzhaffar, Arshad Zamir Zamir, Carmen Soo, Mislina Mustapha and Namron, produced by Woo Ming-jin, Ueda Tomoko, Edmund Yeo and would be presented by Tribu director Jim Libiran. WARHOL LOVES WILLIAMS.MOV Love stories don’t always have a happy ending, but they don’t always have to be forgotten. Esther Robinson immerses herself and paints a picture of exploration and journey to the truth about the disappearance of her uncle, Danny Williams, one-time lover of Andy Warhol. A Walk into the Sea is more than just a reminiscent look at the Factory era, but is also an homage to Williams’ talent, collaborator and filmmaker in his own right, as well as a discovery and compelling inquiry into his mysterious disappearance at the age of 27 in the year of 1966. Robinson’s intimate interviews of the surviving Factory members is brilliantly complemented with the discovery of 20 never-before-seen films of Williams during his stay in the Factory, with the likes of Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick, Paul Morrissey, Brigid Berlin , Billy Name as his subjects. There’s also some footage that allows us to finally bridge the gap in history as to the Velvet Underground. From the eyes of his lover, get to know Warhol not as the iconic Modern Arts persona that we perceive him to be today, but as an artist who has a deep appreciation and understanding of the fragility of the human character, which makes up the core of the empire that he has built. .MOV is proud to present you the Best Gay Film in the Berlin International Film Festival of 2007, A Walk into the Sea: Danny Williams and the Warhol Factory. It’s a love story that was not meant to be, but is too great not to be seen.
F-P-J @ M-O-V Here at .MOV, we do not only celebrate the new, we also pay tribute to the classics. FPJ fans, here’s your chance to see your idol, The King of Philippine Cinema, back in action as we present his 1961 film, “Sandata at Pangako”, at the Film Concert of .MOV. “Sandata at Pangako” starred Fernando Poe, Jr. alongside Charito Solis for LVN pictures. The screenplay was penned and directed by F.H. Constantino. Now’s the opportunity to mend the generation gap as fans of classic Pinoy flicks meet with the new. Not only are we tipping our hats off to The King, we are also screening other films that lit up the Philippine Cinema screens before the era of digital filmmaking for four nights of extravaganza: FILMCONCERT.MOV screens the silent shortfilms of Kidlat Tahimik, Roxlee and Lav Diaz and Pinoy classics by Manuel Conde (“Genghis Khan”, the first Philippine film to compete in Venice), Jose Climaco (“Biglang Yaman”, the comedy classic starring Pugo & Togo), and Carlos Vander Tolosa (“Giliw Ko”, the earliest remaining Philippine film, made in 1939) accompanied with new live soundtracks by Pedicab, Cynthia Alexander, The Brockas, Khavn De La Cruz, Lolita Carbon & Radioactive Sago Project. A Manifesto for a Filmless Philippines Film is dead. It is dead as long as the economy is dead, when public taste and creativity are dead, when the imagination of multi-national movie companies is dead. At millions of pesos per film production, there is not going to be a lot of happy days for the genuine filmmaker, the true artist who wants to make movies, not brainless displays of breasts and gunfire. But technology has freed us. Digital film, with its qualities of mobility, flexibility, intimacy, and accessibility, is the apt medium for a Third World Country like the Philippines . Ironically, the digital revolution has reduced the emphasis on technology and has reasserted the centrality of the filmmaker, the importance of the human condition over visual junk food. Film is dead. Please omit flowers. I. Economics: A minute of celluloid film including processing costs around P1500. A minute of digital film costs around P2. Do the math. A galaxy of difference. II. The only way to make a film is to shoot it. Shoot when you can. Do not delay. If you can finish everything in a day, why not? Sloth is the enemy of the Muse. The shadow filmmaker has now run out of excuses. III. Your digital camera will not turn you into an instant Von Trier, Figgis, or Soderbergh.Your attitude towards filmmaking should be that of an amateur: half-serious, playful, light, not heavy, thus without baggage. There are no mistakes. The important thing is you learn. IV. Utilize all elements within your resources. If you have a knack for music, score your own soundtrack. If you have writing skills, craft your own screenplay. If you have money, invest in gear. If you have none of the above, make sure you have good friends. V. Work within a minimized budget, cast, crew, location, and shooting schedule. Artificial lighting is not a necessity. The story is king. Everything else follows. VI. Work with what you have. Release the bricoleur within. You are not a studio. Accept your present condition. Start here. VII. Forget celebrities. Fuck the star system. Work only with those who are willing to work with you, and those who are dedicated to the craft. Avoid pretentious hangers-on with hidden agendas. Use a lie detector if needed. VIII. Work with humble, patient, passionate, and courageously creative people. Ignore people who are the opposite. IX. If you are alone, do not worry. Digital technology has reduced the crew into an option, rather than a must. Making a film by yourself is now possible. The past is dead. Those who do not change will die. X. Create first, criticize later. Take care of the quantity. God will take care of the quality - that is, assuming you do believe in God. A filmmaker makes films, period. In the name of the revolution, Khavn De La Cruz Festival Director .MOV International Digital Film Festival Khavn On .MOV and The Digital Revolution How many years of film school do you need to become a filmmaker? “The truth is, you don’t need to learn anything. You already know what you need to know. End of school. The only question you need to answer is do you want to make a film? If no, then don’t. If yes, then make one.” How can you make films in a Third World country? "Especially in a third world country like the Philippines , there's no other way to make your own films. There are other routes, but the vision suffers or vanishes totally. You get the usual formulas. That's not the point.” What’s go great about digital? “The medium is literally open to everyone. Anyone can just grab a camera and tell their story. Today's digital film tools are empowering new and underground filmmakers to tell the stories they've been longing to tell without having to sell their souls." .MOV 2008. What’s going on? "More and more independent filmmakers are enticed to make films because of the liberating qualities of the medium. Here in .MOV, the films may not have big budgets or they may not feature big stars. What we have instead are storytellers with good stories to tell.” Tribute.MOV heralds three of independent cinema’s pioneers. Kidlat Tahimik, Roxlee and Lav Diaz. KIDLAT TAHIMIK You know Kidlat Tahimik for Perfumed Nightmare and Turumba but you know him mostly for his self-taught and uncompromising process of filmmaking. On becoming a filmmaker: “Parang hindi masaya yung nasa kalooban ko (as far as the film industry was concerned). Parang nagrerebelde yung sariling duende ko.” On the genesis of Perfumed Nightmare: “Tinutulungan ko palagi (itong batang film student sa Munich ), parang groupie ako noon. And that's where I learned how to handle the Bolex camera. It was also the time when my sariling duende was trying to break out and the result was Perfumed Nightmare. So without trying to become a filmmaker, my filmmaking happened.” On being a Tribute.MOV honoree: “I am both surprised and flattered. Pero pang-matatanda lang yan. I am just a kid - Kidlat.” ROXLEE Roxlee is many things: cartoonist, painter, graphic novelist, animator, filmmaker. And he’s been all these since 1986. And shows no sign of stopping. His latest film is this year’s Musikadong & Green Rocking Chair . On independent film: “Dapat may law na ipasa na nagsasabing dapat ipalabas lahat ng indie movies sa bus. Kasi captive audience na yan eh.” On the proliferation of Hollywood movies: “Kasi hindi ba nakakasama ng loob na marami namang pelikulang Pinoy na pwedeng ipalabas pero mga Hollywood movies pa rin yung sinasalang nila.” On the rewards of sticking to his guns: “Hindi ko iniisip na magkakapera ako, na pagkakakitaan ko yung ginagawa ko. Form of release talaga eh.” On the future of the local film scene: “Meron pa rin akong hope. Syempre naman. Kasi mabenta pa rin dito yung sigarilyong Hope eh, di ba?” LAV DIAZ In just a decade, Lav Diaz has become one of the most significant filmmakers in the Philippines and in the world. He recently won the Orrizonti Prize at the Venice International Film Festival. On humble beginnings: “I came from a literary background, writing for newspapers, komiks and even Jingle magazine.” On his greatest literary act: “Selling encyclopedias in Makati . Dalawa lang yata yung nabenta ko. Mga kamag-anak ko pa yung bumili.” On being a Tribute .MOV honoree: “Humbling siya. Recognition for what you've done, ‘yung struggle.” .MOV GALLERIA ORTIGAS Screening Sked September 30 to October 7 Mark your Calendars. Make sure you have lots of ink.
